Tax Setup

In this section you will define some basic information about the tax structure in the province(s)/state(s)/territory(ies) in which you do business. For most of these sections, click Save after each entry. When finished, use the Applications Menu or the Sidebar to go on.

  • Tax location - Enter the geographical area(s) in which you pay business or sales taxes then click Save.
  • Tax categories - your state or province may have many different categories of goods or services subject to tax. Goods may be classed for tax purposes as Luxury, General, Untaxed, and so on. Enter all the relevant tax categories then click Save.
  • Tax Authorities - This name may be slightly confusing. What you enter here is the name of the actual tax. Examples are State of Washington Sales Tax, Canadian GST, California Energy Surtax, Zero Rated Export Duties, Nova Scotia Sales Tax. The Tax Authority ID is a whole number (as simple as 1, 2, 3...). Tax Authority Name is where you enter the name of the tax. Select the GL accounts for tax collected and tax paid. Click Save after each entry.
  • Tax Groups - Tis section allows you to group various taxes for report purposes. Suppose you sell into the states of Balderdash and Nonsense. Balderdash has a sales tax, a hat tax, and a luxury tax. Nonsense has a sales tax, a poll tax, and a luxury tax. You've already entered these into Categories (sales, poll, luxury, hat) and Authorities (State of Balderdash Sales Tax etc). Here you would create two groups: Balderdash and Nonsense.
  • Group Taxes- Select the group, authority, order etc. then click Save to add the new group. Repeat as necessary. This sets the display order and grouping in some reports. It's also used when assigning who pays what tax, and actually charging the taxes. Further on in the Wizard, you will set the tax group for a client, and pERP will put the taxes in that group on their invoices.
  • Tax Rate - Select the Authority, Location, and Category and enter the tax rate as a decimal number. So four percent is 0.04, while eight-and-six-tenths percent (8.6%) is 0.086. Click Save after each entry.
